Welcome to Art Dictionaries
Art Dictionaries Ltd is a first-stop reference source for biographies of British artists of the 19th and 20th centuries – from the Newlyn School to Modern British, BritArt, the Turner Prize and beyond. Its associated company, Sansom & Company publishes artist monographs and regional studies.
Art Dictionaries was set up in the late 1990s to publish David Buckman´s Dictionary of Artists in Britain since 1945. With over 10,000 entries, that immense collection of artist profiles was widely acclaimed. One reviewer rated it 'the year's most important contribution to British art history'.
The first edition sold out and a much enlarged version has now been published, with approximately 14,500 entries.
Now established as a leading publisher of biographical source material, Art Dictionaries has published a study of the Walberswick art community and, again to widespread acclaim, a new edition of Marshall Hall's essential Artists of Northumbria.
Future publications include Artists in Newlyn and West Cornwall 1880-1940, edited by Dr Melissa Hardie, for publication in Spring 2008. In 2009 The Dictionary of Artists in Wales since 1945, compiled and written by Isabel Hitchman and Dr Peter Jones, will be a major celebration of the art scene in Wales.
An associated company, Sansom & Company publishes books on Modern British Art from around 1880 to the present day. It is the leading publisher of books on the Newlyn School. www.sansomandcompany.co.uk
